Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) - 11 July 2013. Ndutu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

This Palearctic species is a migrant and winter visitor to Tanzania. The earliest autumn arrivals start in mid-July but they are not common until late in July. This individual seems to be in breeding plumage, so I suspect it is an early arriving migrant. Over-summering is rare. Historical records of this species breeding in Uganda and Kenya (Britton 1980) are now believed to have been forgeries (N. Baker pers. comm.).
