Crowned Hawk-Eagle (Stephanoaetus coronatus) - 6 July 2013. Lake Manyara National Park, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

This imposing raptor is a listed as "near threatened" because of habitat destruction. It is a resident of large forests where it perches inconspicuously in the canopy. It specializes on eating Colobus Monkeys but reportedly can take prey as large as an adult Duiker. This individual appears to be molting with a mixture of old light brown and new dark brown feathers on the mantle. It takes three or four years to become fully adult. This bird appears to be a sub-adult. This species is also known as Crowned Eagle (IOC and African Bird Club) and African Crowned Eagle. It is the sole member of the genus Stephanoaetus. A second species occurred on Madagascar but is now extinct.
