Dark Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax metabates metabates) - 13 July 2013. Kopje picnic area, Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

Perched atop a rock outcrop (kopje). This bird appears to be molting with some fresh scapulars and tertials replaced. There are a number of similar species. The gray throat distinguishes it from the Lizard Buzzard (Kaupifalco monogrammicus). The red bill and cere help distinguish it from the Eastern Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax poliopterus) now split from Pale Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax canorus). This photo also shows the densely barred undertail coverts which help distinguish it from the Gabar Goshawk (Micronisus gabar).

Five subspecies are recognized. This is the widespread nominate race. Clements hyphenates the English name of this bird, but other authorities do not.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
