Dark Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax metabates metabates) - 12 July 2013. Serengeti National Park,
Shinyanga Region, Tanzania.
Perched atop a rock outcrop (kopje). There are a number of similar species. The gray throat distinguishes it from the Lizard Buzzard (Kaupifalco monogrammicus). The red bill and cere help distinguish it from the Eastern Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax poliopterus) now split from Pale Chanting-Goshawk (Melierax canorus). Five subspecies are recognized. This is the widespread nominate race. Clements hyphenates the English name of this bird, but other authorities do not. Nikon P510 Coolpix Point-and-shoot |
