Eastern Plantain-eater (Crinifer zonurus) - 14 July 2013. Grumeti River Crossing, Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

This species is often called Eastern Grey Plantain-eater. We spent a fair amount of time looking for this Turaco and had essentially given up when our driver spotted one in the top of a bare tree. I snapped the lower photo showing the white bands on the wings and tail just as the bird flew. Despite its name, its diet is reported to be primarily figs and corkwood fruit. The standard field guides say the bright yellow bill indicates a female while males have a greenish bill. Others sources (e.g. HBW) say there is no difference in bill color between the sexes. Does anybody know the truth of the matter?

This species has a limited range in Tanzania, just barely reaching the Serengeti. Some authors (Peters) have lumped it with the Western Plantain-eater (C. piscator). Peters used the name C. africanus for the combination arguing that Boddaert's 1783 name (C. piscator) was based on an unidentifiable illustration. The two form a superspecies.
