Common Eland (Taurotragus oryx pattersonianus) - 12 July 2013. Serengeti National Park, Shinyanga Region, Tanzania.

Elands are in the spiral-horned antelope tribe Tragelaphini. They are the largest of the antelopes in the area, with males substantially larger than females. We found them to be locally common, but generally shy. Three races are recognized. This is T. o. pattersonianus (East African Eland). It is darker and more rufous, with females more brightly colored. It also has smaller horns and up to 12 side stripes visible.
