Fan-tailed Widowbird (Euplectes axillaris phoeniceus) - 8 July 2013. Lake Magadi, Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

These birds were common in the Lake Magadi reed beds. Non-breeding males resemble females, but here the black tail and bases of the body feathers are visible, suggesting this is a male. This species prefers wetlands and has a patchy distribution throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. The genus Euplectes includes bishops and widowbirds. They are included in the Ploceidae (Weavers and Allies).

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
