Fischer's Lovebird (Agapornis fischeri) - 10 July 2013. Ndutu Safari Lodge, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

Males and females are similar. Additional photos. This attractive East African endemic has a limited range centered on northern Tanzania. Formerly more widespread, large concentrations are now reportedly restricted to the area around Ndutu and the adjacent Serengeti.

It is a popular cage-bird and as a consequence is listed as "near threatened" because of extensive trapping for export. It was the most commonly traded wild bird in the world in 1987 and the most popular wild-caught parrot imported into Europe at that time. Legal trapping for export has now been halted in Tanzania, but the population is still much lower than it was.

Established populations in adjacent Kenya are of questionable origin. The species remains common in captivity and escapes have become established in settled areas. In many of these areas, they hybridize with other similar species.
