Gray-backed Fiscal (Lanius excubitoroides boehmi) - 13 July 2013. Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

This Central African shrike reaches its southern limit in Western Tanzania where it prefers arid grasslands with scattered trees. It is a cooperative breeding species but only one pair actually nests within each cooperative group. The size of the groups varies from two up to 20 individuals with many helpers. Birds breeding in Tanzania are assigned to the race L. e. boehmi which is larger and has faint brown streaks mixed with the gray upperparts. These faint markings are visible in this photo on the nape and upper back. As usual, the English name is often spelled Grey-backed Fiscal depending on national preferences.
