Gray-headed Kingfisher (Halcyon leucocephala) - 4 July 2013. Tarangire Safari Lodge, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

This was a the most common kingfisher in the area, found in both woodlands and near water. Two races occur in Northern Tanzania. Nominate is mostly resident while the paler H. l. pallidiventris is a migrant from the south. This individual has a dark tip to its bill and gray shading on its breast suggesting it may be a female or immature and making subspecies determination uncertain.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
