Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta umbretta) - 14 July 2013. Grumeti River Crossing, Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

The worn tips to the wing coverts suggest that this is an adult bird. Endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, this species is the sole member of the family Scopidae. It appears to be related to the herons, but has odd features suggesting affinities with storks, flamingoes and even plovers. It is said to build the largest nest of any bird in the world, although the bird itself is only about the size of a night-heron. The name "Hamerkop" is Afrikaans for "hammer-head."
