Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta umbretta) - 2 July 2013. Arusha - Himo Rd, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

The buff tips to the wing coverts suggest that this is an immature bird. Endemic to sub-Saharan Africa, this species is the sole member of the family Scopidae. It appears to be related to the herons, but has odd features suggesting affinities with storks, flamingoes and even plovers. It is said to build the largest nest of any bird in the world, although the bird itself is only about the size of a night-heron. The name "Hamerkop" is Afrikaans for "hammer-head."
