Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibius) - 13 July 2013. Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

Hippos are in their own family, but appear to have evolved from pig-like ancestors. Sadly, at least three species of hippos have gone extinct in Madagascar within historical times. Currently only two species survive in continental Africa. This is the largest and most widespread, but it has disappeared from much of its former range and is now listed as threatened by IUCN.
