Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus) - 13 July 2013. Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

This is the smallest of the regularly occurring vultures in the area and is said to be declining throughout much of its range. The dark feathering on its nape and face suggests it is a young bird. Immatures usually have the bare facial skin white or gray but it may flush pinkish giving a more adult like color as in this case.

It is apparently much rarer than previously believed and its status was changed from Least Concern to Endangered on the 2011 Red List of Threatened species. Its recent steep decline has been attributed to a combination of habitat destruction, avian flu, capture for traditional medicine and bushmeat, and direct persecution. Hooded Vulture meat is reportedly sold as chicken in some places.
