The light eye is visible in this photo. The former Rufous Sparrow (P. rufocinctus) has undergone a four-way split as follows:

  1. Great Rufous Sparrow (Passer motitensis) - three races - Southern Africa
  2. Kenya Rufous Sparrow (Passer rufocinctus) - light eye - Rift Valley
  3. Shelley's Rufous Sparrow (Passer shelleyi) - dark eye - Uganda
  4. Kordofan Rufous Sparrow (Passer cordofanicus) - Sudan & Chad
