Leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) - 13 July 2013. Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

We finally got nice views of this iconic predator. The IUCN has classified this declining species as near threatened, noting that it might qualify as vulnerable because of habitat loss and fragmentation. They are now rare outside of protected areas. According to a genetic study by Uphyrkina, O. et al. (2001) [PDF], the nominate race occurs throughout Sub-Saharan Africa. Formerly East African populations were assigned to P. p. suahelica.
