Nubian Woodpecker (Campethera nubica nubica) - 10 July 2013. Ndutu Safari Lodge, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

This is a female with red confined to the nape. The crown and malar is a salt & pepper pattern of dark with small white spots, not solid red as in males. This bird was very cryptic and I had much difficulty spotting it even when it was in the open. The species is endemic to East Africa. This is the darker nominate race found in the interior.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
