The Plains Zebra (Equus quagga, formerly Equus burchelli), also known as the Common Zebra or Burchell's Zebra, is the most widespread species of zebra. This is E. q. boehmi, the smallest of the six races of Plains Zebra. It is often called Grant's Zebra.
It turns out that the extinct Quagga (E. quagga) of South Africa was actually a race of Burchell's Zebra. Since the E. quagga was first described in 1785, its name had priority over E. burchelli which wasn't described until 1824. Thus when the two were lumped, the scientific name of Burchell's Zebra had to be changed. Currently the name Burchell's Zebra is restricted to another race of Plains Zebra (Equus quagga burchellii) found in southern Africa.
