Purple Grenadier (Granatina ianthinogaster) - 13 July 2013. Kopje picnic area. Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

This attractive, colorful waxbill is rather secretive, although reasonably common. This is an adult male. The extent of violet-blue on the underparts is variable. It is an East African endemic reaching the southern limit of its range in Tanzania. Most authors include it with the Cordonbleus in the genus Uraeginthus, but Clements 6th edition moved it to Granatina following HBW.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA |hand-held (no adapter).
