Pygmy Falcon (Polihierax semitorquatus) - 10 July 2013. Ndutu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

This diminutive falcon is said to be the smallest raptor in Africa. It is about the size of an American Kestrel (Falco sparverius). The East African population is said to be dependent on the unused nests of White-headed Buffalo Weavers (Dinemellia dinemelli) for nesting. Two populations are widely separated, one in East Africa and the other in Southern Africa. They are sometimes considered separate subspecies (e.g. IOC), but Clements and HBW consider the species monotypic.
