Red-necked Francolin (Francolinus afer melanogaster) - 4 July 2013. Tarangire National Park, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

This species is divided into two distinctive subspecies groups. This is the southern F. a. melanogaster which has a boldly spangled chest and black belly. It intergrades with the coastal race F. a. leucoparaeus which is similar but has more white on its face. The other subspecies group is uniformly gray below and includes F. a. cranchii which ranges to the north and west. The two groups are candidates for splitting. African Bird Club and IOC still call this species the Red-necked Spurfowl.
