Rufous-naped Lark (Mirafra africana tropicalis) - 8 July 2013. Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha Region, Tanzania.
![]() This species is fairly widespread in grasslands. The dark crown and broad chest spotting suggest this is a juvenile. Clements recognizes 23 different subspecies, with birds of the Crater Highlands being M. a. tropicalis. These birds are more heavily marked and more buffy below cf. races further north and east, but generally lack any noticeable rufous on the nape. Most authors now lump this species with the former Somali Lark (Mirafra sharpii). Nikon P510 Coolpix Point-and-shoot. |
