Silvery-cheeked Hornbill (Ceratogymna brevis) - 6 July 2013. Lake Manyara National Park, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

This forest species is found mostly east of the rift valley where it prefers to forage in the canopy. Top is an adult male in which the huge pale-colored casque extends beyond the tip of the bill. This one was calling loudly with raucous, braying vocalizations. Bottom is a female showing its shorter casque, concolor with the bill. It also has red orbital skin unlike the male whose orbital is gray. Both sexes have reflective gray tips to their facial feathers which provide the "silvery cheeks" for which the species is named.
