Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta) - 8 July 2013. Ngorongoro Crater, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

Also known as Laughing Hyena. These animals have a bizarre sex life in which dominate females develop male-like genitalia. They also have a complex matriarchal social structure. Females are larger than males, and dominate them. Clans are very large, but unlike many other carnivores their social structure is highly competitive rather than cooperative. Much recent research on these animals is from a captive group of about 20 individuals at U.C. Berkeley. However the project has reportedly lost its funding and its future is uncertain.
