Steenbok (Raphicerus campestris naumanni) - 11 July 2013. Ndutu, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Arusha Region, Tanzania.


This small antelope is identified by its white eyering with black scent-gland in front of the eye, and dark wedge on top of its snout. Only the male has horns. Six or more subspecies are recognized with R. c. neumanni found in Southern Kenya and Northern Tanzania. This race lacks a dark crescent between its ears and has large, complete white eye-rings. Here the male was courting the female with what appeared to be extensive foreplay (video below). However we did not see actual copulation.

This species is sometimes called "Steinbuck" or "Steinbok."
