Tropical Boubou (Laniarius aethiopicus major) - 6 July 2013. Gibb's Farm, Karatu, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

I was very happy to get this photo. The species was rather elusive, at least when I was around. This bird resembles the Northern Fiscal (Lanius humeralis) but behaves quite differently. The boubou (pronounced boo-boo) is a skulker in the vegetation while the fiscal tends to sit in the open. This photo shows the pink blush on the underparts which helps confirm the identification. Fiscals are in the Shrike family (Laniidae) while boubous are in the Bushshrike family (Mlaconotidae).

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
