Unknown Passerine - 6 July 2013. Near Karatu, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

Not identified in the field at the time. Opinions remain sharply divided among the following four suggestions:

  1. Southern Grosbeak-Canary Serinus buchanani
  2. Brimstone Canary Serinus sulphuratus sharpii
  3. White-bellied Canary Serinus dorsostriatus dorsostriatus
  4. Weaver sp. Ploceus sp.

The bird on the right in the middle photo is a White-bellied Canary (Serinus dorsostriatus) which was common in the area. Any help identifying this mystery bird would be much appreciated.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
