Usambiro Barbet (Trachyphonus darnaudii usambiro) - 13 July 2013. Kopje picnic area; Serengeti National Park, Mara Region, Tanzania.

This species may be divided into three groups:

D'Arnaud's (T.d. darnaudii/boehmi)
Usambiro (T.d. usambiro)
Black-capped (T.d. emini)

This is the Usambiro type which is endemic to the Serengeti/Masai region of northern Tanzania. The Usambiro Barbet, formerly considered a separate species was lumped with D'Arnaud's Barbet in the 5th edition of Clements. However some authorities, most notably Birdlife International still consider Usambiro Barbet to be a separate species.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
