White-eyed Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis fischeri nyikensis) - 6 July 2013. Gibb's Farm, Karatu, Arusha Region, Tanzania.

This was a very confiding individual. This species has been split from the Abyssinian Slaty-Flycatcher (Melaenornis chocolatinus). Several races are recognized but M. f. nyikensis is the only one in which the eyering is incomplete and broken in front and behind the eye. The IOC places these birds in the genus Dioptrornis. Unfortunately the official Tanzanian checklist follows this idiosyncratic IOC nomenclature.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
