Yellow-collared Lovebird (Agapornis personatus) - 3 July 2013. Tarangire National Park, Manyara Region, Tanzania.

This species is endemic to Tanzania reaching the northern limit of its native range here at Tarangire. This species has been trapped and exported for the pet trade since the 1920's and is common in captivity. Many of these captive birds have escaped and have established self-sustaining breeding populations in adjacent Kenya and elsewhere. These captive birds often hybridize with Fischer's Lovebird (A. fischeri). Many feral populations established in towns and villages are said to consist largely of hybrid types. This species sometimes goes under the English name, Masked Lovebird and was formerly given the species name A. personata. The change to A. personatus was presumably for nomenclatural gender agreement.

In post-processing, I applied a soft Gaussian blur filter to the background and foreground with the idea of subduing some of the distracting sunlight reflections.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
