Ashy Woodswallow (Artamus fuscus) - 7 January 2013 Chin River, Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand Photo © 2013 Joseph Morlan

Artamidae (Woodswallows) are a uniquely Old World family of birds with a heavy finch-like bill. There is evidence that they form a clade with butcherbirds, bell-magpies, and allies (Cracticidae). In fact the latest Australian checklist combines them all in the same family. I think their strong heavy bill shape supports this arrangements.

This is the only species of woodswallow that we saw in Thailand where it occurred in a variety of open habitats. They forage aerially like swallows. Sometimes we would see them huddled together on a power line, especially early in the morning. Males and females are alike.
