Part of a flock of a dozen or so winter plumage birds foraging in the tall grasses.

This is a colonial species in which males build elaborate hanging woven nests with long hanging entrance tunnels. Each male builds several nests attracting up to five females in a season. Studies have shown that females prefer to mate with males who have well located and well constructed nests. Of the five races currently recognized, this is P. p. infortunatus which ranges across southern Thailand and down the Malay Peninsula. It is said to be more rufous on its back, breast and flanks than other races.

Males and females are alike on the non-breeding season.
