Black-winged Stilt (Himantopus himantopus) - 13 January 2013 - Pak Thale, Petchaburi Province, Thailand. Photo © 2013 Joseph Morlan

These long-legged waders were abundant and conspicuous in the salt evaporation ponds where they feed on brine shrimp. I believe this is a male in non-breeding plumage. Females are browner on the back.

Taxonomy and geographic variation confused, but currently considered monotypic.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA |hand-held (no adapter).
