Blue-tailed Bee-eater (Merops philippinus) - 13 January 2013 - Hat Chao Samran, Phetchaburi Province, Thailand. Photos © 2013 Joseph Morlan

Here the blue tail and uppertail coverts are visible. This individual is in molt. The new tail-prongs are not fully grown. The lower photo shows more details on the state of molt. The tail molt is oddly asymmetrical. On the right half of the tail, R1, R3 and R5 are new while R2, R4 and R6 are old and worn. On the left half of the tail R1 and R2 are new while R3-R6 seem to be old.

Bee-eaters have 10 primaries. Here P10 is old on both wings while P9 is growing in and P1-P8 are new.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA |hand-held (no adapter).
