The frontal shield becomes red as seen here during a brief period of courtship. This is an adult. These birds like to hide in the reeds and were tricky to photograph.

Jacanas are famous for their very long toes which allow them to spread their weight so that they can walk on top of floating aquatic vegetation. They are also noted for polyandry in which females mate with multiple males who take build the nests, incubate the eggs and care for the chicks.
