Greater Racket-tailed Drongo (Dicrurus paradiseus paradiseusi) - 8 January 2013 - Suan Wachira Benchathat Park, Bangkok, Thailand Photos © 2013 Joseph Morlan

Thirteen races recognized by Clements and HBW. Based on range, this is presumably the nominate race in which the crest reaches almost to the middle of the crown. The tail is moderately long compared to other races. The Sri Lanka Drongo (Dicrurus lophorinus) was formerly considered a race, but is now split and treated as a separate species.

The elongated tail-feathers are spread wide as seen in the lower photo and then closed rhythmically during display. The feathers around the neck form a glossy "cape," but are raised during display bouts and are clearly visible here. In this bottom photo, the relatively small and poorly defined white breast "spangles" typical of this race can be seen.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA |hand-held (no adapter).
