Green Bee-eater (Merops orientalis ferrugeiceps) - 7 January 2013 KM 78 Rama II Road, Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand Photo © 2013 Joseph Morlan

Bee-eaters (family Meropidae) are confined to the Old World but their colorful plumage, long pointed bills and long central tail-feathers remind me of the Motmots (Momotidae) of the American tropics. Both build nests by excavating cavities in earth embankments with their strong bills. Both are members of the order Coraciiformes.

This species is also sometimes called "Little Green Bee-eater." It is a tropical species ranging from Sub-Saharan Africa through India and Southeast Asia. The race in Thailand is M. o. ferrugeiceps which as its name implies, has a rusty cap.
