Little Cormorant (Phalacrocorax niger) 5 January 2013 near Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok, Thailand Photo © 2013 Joseph Morlan

This is an adult in basic plumage. Breeding plumage brings white plumes to the bird's head and a darker bill. This species is a resident in Central Thailand and ranges through much of India and Southeast Asia.

Some authors treat it as a race of the similar Pygmy Cormorant (P.pygmaeus) of the Middle East. Both share a short very stubby bill and small size. This photo shows the well defined white chin of Little. The pattern is more blended in Pygmy. Both are sometimes placed in the genera Halietor or Microcarbo.

This individual was hanging out with Asian Openbills in a vacant lot near our hotel.
