Long-tailed Broadbill (Psarisomus dalhousiae dalhousiae) - 9 January 2013 - Khao Yai National Park, Thailand Photos © 2013 Joseph Morlan

This is an adult with a striking black and yellow helmet. It appears to be holding a short piece of material in the tip of its bill, possibly nesting material. It was part of a small flock which, despite their bright colors were frustratingly difficult to spot in the forest. Their loud shrill whistles gave them away.

Broadbills are believed to be an ancient lineage of Old World suboscines represented by a scattering of relict species. The distinctive Long-tailed Broadbill is the only member of its genus. Five subspecies are currently recognized. This is the widespread nominate race which has a yellow collar.
