Red-wattled Lapwing (Vanellus indicus atronuchalis) - 15 January 2013 - Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi, Phetchaburi Province, Thailand. Photos © 2013 Joseph Morlan

These lapwings were quite common and conspicuous near ponds and lakes. This is an adult. In this race, V. i. atronuchalis, which ranges east from India and Burma, a black area on the side of the neck isolates the white ear patch as seen here, and there is a white collar on the back of the neck. On other races the white face connects to the white breast. The red "V" shaped mark connecting the bill to the eye is bare skin and comprises a small "wattle" in this species.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA |hand-held (no adapter).
