These were fairly common in a variety of habitats but mostly in settled areas. Many subspecies have been described, but only three are currently recognized. Birds in Thailand are S. c. tigrina, which differ in having whitish undertail coverts and black shaft streaks on their wing coverts as seen here. Eye color usually varies from orange to orange-brown (upper image) or pink. The lower image seems to have a yellow iris.

The nominate race has been widely introduced, including Southern California where a small but rapidly declining population barely persists.
