White-browed Piculet (Sasia ochracea reichenowi) - female - 15 January 2013 - Kaeng Krachan National Park, Phetchaburi, Phetchaburi Province, Thailand. Photos © 2013 Joseph Morlan

This tiny woodpecker relative has only three toes and a very short tail. It forages very differently from typical woodpeckers; it grips vines and hangs from them. This is a female which has a rufous rather than yellow forehead.

The white eyebrow helps distinguish it from the similar Rufous Piculet. The race occurring in this area is reichenowi which has dark lores and a black rather than red orbital ring.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA | hand-held (no adapter).
