Yellow-vented Bulbul (Pycnonotus goiavier jambu) 7 January 2013 KM 78 Rama II Road, Samut Sakhon Province, Thailand Photos © 2013 Joseph Morlan

Bulbuls(Pycnonotidae) are a strictly Old World family of birds usually characterized by long hairlike feathers on their nape, evident in this photo. This is the race Pycnonotus goiavier jambu which ranges from southern Burma to southern Indochina. It is darker and more dingy on the underparts than Pycnonotus goiavier personatus (analis is a synonym) which replaces it on the Malay Peninsula to the south.

Digiscoped with Panasonic DMC-LX5 | Nikon FieldScope III | 30XWA |hand-held (no adapter).
