These birds were abundant in settled areas around towns and villages. The species ranges from Southern Myanmar to Malaysia, Sumatra and Java. On our recent visit to Thailand we called them "Peaceful Doves" following the Robson field guide, but the latest Clements and HBW split them, confining Peaceful Dove (G. placida) to Australia and New Guinea. The official Thailand checklist also calls them Zebra Doves.

Peaceful Doves have barring extending all the way across the breast, while Zebra Doves have barring confined to the sides of the breast such as on this bird. The two species also have different vocalizations. Earlier authors such as Goodwin considered them conspecific. The species occurs as feral escapes in a number of areas including parts of Thailand. This individual posed in a vacant lot near our hotel.
