Vesper Sparrow (Pooecetes gramineus)
This is a rare, local winter visitor in coastal California foothills. They have been wintering here since December 28, 2017 when three birds were found by Chis Macintosh and John Esterl. We only saw two birds, one of which is missing its tail (top twophotos). Bottom photo reveals chestnut lesser coverts which are often concealed. Henry David Thoreau called this bird the "Bay Wing."

Two subspecies are possible in winter in this area, interior P. g. confinis and coastal P. g. affinis. I am not confident of the subspecies here, but suspect it is the paler, longer-tailed P. g. confinis. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS.
