Western Bluebird (Sialia mexicana occidentalis), 24 May, 2008 Peters Canyon Regional Park, Orange, Orange County, California.

This is a breeding pair and a juvenile offspring. The race S. m. occidentalis is found along the Coastal Slope from British Columbia to Baja. They are variable in appearance but usually have chestnut on the back reaching the forward scapulars. Their blue color averages paler than other races. In many areas, this species has declined because of competition from introduced European Starlings. Bluebird trails and conservation management have met with some success. Notice the band on the male's leg. The female's shiny perch is actually the handle to the lid of a garbage can. The juvenile shows the yellow gape flanges of very young fledglings. Although both the male and female were feeding this fledgling, the female was also gathering nesting material apparently for another nesting attempt.
