New Caledonian Friarbird (Philemon diemenensis) 22 September 2019, Parc de la Rivière Bleue, New
Caledonia
![]() We first noticed this rather lanky bird from its loud, raucous calls. Friarbirds are a bizarre group
in the Honeyeater (Meliphagidae) family. They are famously aggressive. Most have somber plumage, massive bills
and some have bare skin on their head. However, this New Caledonian endemic's head is fully feathered and its bluish
wing coverts are unique. Canon PowerShot SX60.References: Dutson, G. (2011) Birds of Melanesia, Christopher Helm, London. Higgins, P., Christidis, L. & Ford, H. (2019).
