Osprey (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) 18 September 2019, Gizo, New Georgia Group, Solomon Islands
Osprey (
Pandion haliaetus)
The Osprey is a unique fish-eating raptor placed in its own family, the Pandionidae. Gill and Donsker (2019) consider this well marked race to be a separate species, "Eastern Osprey" P. cristatus. It differs from other Osprey subspecies in being smaller, whiter-headed and having unmarked grayish underwing coverts and a contrasting dark breast band as seen here. Note staggered wing molt (staffelmauser) with older p8 and p9 contrasting with fresh p10 indicating this is an adult. Canon PowerShot SX60.
