Sword-tailed Newt (Cynops ensicauda) 3 September 2019. Amami Nature Forest Observatory, Amami-Oshima
Island, Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan
I originally assumed this was the widespread Japanese Fire-bellied Newt (C. pyrrhogaster). However the newts on the Ryukyu Archipelago including Amami Oshima, are actually this very rare, critically endangered species. It may be distinguished from the Fire-bellied Newt by its larger size, broader head, longer tail (especially females), smoother skin, and pale toe pads. Like their similar cousins, this species is highly toxic if ingested. The main threats are deforestation and development as well as introduced carp in their breeding ponds. Two subspecies are recognized. This is the nominate race. Another race breeds on Okinawa. Canon PowerShot SX60 HS. |
