White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis) 28 March 2012. Pacifica, San Mateo County, CA Photos © 2012 Joseph Morlan

This is an uncommon winter visitor and migrant in California. This season we have had two different individuals visiting our yard. This is the brighter of the two. The species is famous for negative assortative mating between the two color morphs. This is a white-striped morph. They prefer to mate with tan-striped morphs and vice versa.
